Statement of Need
The anticoagulation paradigm for the management of stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (SPAF) has undergone dramatic change during the past few years due to the recent approval of two novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs), with additional compounds pending approval and/or undergoing clinical trials. Utilizing a case-enhanced approach, this interactive webinar focuses on key information and evidence-based data that Emergency Department (ED) professionals need to know about use of NOACs, whether initiating treatment in the ED or managing a presenting patient who is already taking one of these new agents.
Educational Objectives
Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Differentiate the clinical evidence regarding efficacy and safety, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, dosing, and drug interactions for available and emerging novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs).
- Summarize current evidence-based guidelines and appropriate risk-assessment tools for selection of anticoagulants for SPAF therapy.
- Using available evidence, develop strategies for evaluation and management of patients taking NOACs who present to the emergency department with acute medical conditions.
