Target Audience

This educational initiative is intended for infectious disease specialists, emergency medicine physicians, hospitalists, internists, pulmonary and critical care physicians, clinical department heads, and hospital administrators. It may also be of benefit to other healthcare professionals interested in the treatment of infectious disease and/or involved with decision making at the institutional level.

Statement Of Need

Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) leads to significant morbidity, mortality, and cost burden to the healthcare system. Data indicate that providing evidence-based care, according to guidelines, leads to improved patient outcomes and decreases healthcare costs. Therefore, with the goal of improving quality of care for patients, the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed Core Measures for CABP, and recently updated them to include specific recommendations for antibiotic use.

Hospitals are mandated to meet these measures, first and foremost, to improve patient outcomes. Meeting these standards is also critical to achieve Joint Commission accreditation and to obtain maximum reimbursement from CMS. Earning these incentives will be key for hospital financial viability because under the new reimbursement system, a hospital’s baseline DRG payments will be reduced by increasing amounts between 2013 and 2017. Hospitals must therefore develop effective programs to ensure that clinicians manage patients with CABP according to these established quality standards.

Educational Objectives

Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Apply evidence-based strategies into clinical practice to ensure that management of patients with CABP is consistent with current clinical evidence and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Describe actions that can be taken at the institutional level to help ensure that care for patients with CABP is consistent with Joint Commission/CMS Core Measures.
