Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians specializing in internal medicine as either a primary or subspecialty, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers (HCPs) interested in the management of patients with IBS.

Statement of Need
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) are chronic and at times debilitating conditions that exact a high physical, emotional, and financial toll on affected patients. Symptoms associated with these conditions prompt about 23 million outpatient visits to HCPs annually. In many cases, symptoms remain unresolved for years, in part because clinicians remain unfamiliar with how to accurately diagnose IBS (including subtypes) and CIC. Conventional treatments prescribed by HCPs typically target only 1 or 2 symptoms, leading to inadequate relief and patient dissatisfaction. This enduring activity will provide participants with education on guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of IBS and CIC, including how to integrate new targeted therapies into clinical practice.

Learning Objectives
Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Describe evidence-based inclusion criteria for diagnosing IBS (subtypes), CIC, and opioid-induced constipation, as well as alarm symptoms that require further workup for differential diagnosis.
  • Appropriately incorporate new targeted therapies into treatment plans for patients with IBS (subtypes), CIC, and opioid-induced constipation based on individual patient characteristics and current clinical evidence.
Table of Contents
  • Incidence and Impact of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • IBS-C: Challenges, Myths and Realities, and Management Pearls
  • CIC: Challenges, Myths and Realities, and Management Pearls
  • Opioid-Induced Constipation: Challenges, Myths and Realities, and Management Pearls
  • Conclusions
