Program Overview

This educational workshop features faculty presentations, followed by demonstrations and hands-on experience with intrauterine device (IUD) insertion and removal. The guidance by the faculty and proctors on IUD options is supported by simulator and anatomical models at stations in the workshop room. The workshop will devote time to the patient education plan and shared decision-making for IUD selection. Learners will have the opportunity to review and discuss patients’ pain perception and management at IUD insertion.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe IUDs’ benefits and risks for patients seeking contraception, including adolescents
  • Apply best practices for proper IUD insertion and removal for eligible patients, including pain management
  • Develop a communication plan to address patients’ concerns about pain during and after IUD insertion
