Target Audience
This activity has been designed to address the educational needs of primary care providers, hospitalists, internists, gerontologists, pulmonologists, clinical pharmacists, nurse practitioners, PAs, respiratory therapists, residents, and fellows engaged or interested in the care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It may also benefit other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with COPD.

Statement of Need
This educational activity will familiarize clinicians with best practices for diagnosing COPD and strategies to determine appropriate maintenance medication and device selection based on the unique characteristics, uses, and challenges associated with the variety of inhalers and nebulizers that are available. This education will be instrumental in helping clinicians select both a medication plan and device that suits their patients’ individual needs, abilities, and preferences to ensure adherence and reduce the rate of negative outcomes such as exacerbations, hospitalizations, and mortality.  

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Diagnose patients with COPD in accordance with guideline recommendations and with vigilance for comorbidities that may contribute to symptom burden 
  • Formulate evidence-based treatment plans for patients with COPD based on symptom severity and exacerbation history 
  • Individualize selection of COPD medication device based on individual characteristics, including technique needed for proper actuation and use
