Target Audience
This activity has been designed to address the educational needs of physicians specializing in cardiology, interventional cardiology, heart failure, internal medicine, hospital medicine, pulmonary medicine, emergency medicine, and primary care. This activity will also be of benefit to nurse practitioners, PAs, and other clinicians interested in the management of chronic heart failure.
 
Learning Objectives
Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Describe the underlying pathophysiology of chronic heart failure, including differentiation between heart failure with reduced or preserved left ventricular ejection fraction.
  • Review the 2013 ACCF/AHA heart failure guidelines and the basis for the recommendations along with the 2016 ACC/AHA/HFSA update to the guidelines.
  • Describe the background information supporting the 2016 guideline update including mechanisms of action, clinical evidence for, and appropriate use of newer heart failure therapies.
