TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists interested in the management of patients with hyponatremia.

STATEMENT OF NEED
This home study activity examines the complexities of managing hyponatremia—one of the most common disorders of fluid and electrolyte balance encountered in clinical practice—and discusses the impact that appropriate treatment choices have on patients and health systems. Hyponatremia is common in such conditions as heart failure, cirrhosis, and syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), among others, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality and with longer patient hospital stays. Pharmacists play a pivotal function in supporting physician management of patients with hyponatremia, helping to effectively bridge the gap between available treatments and optimal outcomes.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this knowledge-based home study activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Describe the pathophysiology of hyponatremia as well as its signs and symptoms
  • Examine the prevalence and clinical and economic consequences of hyponatremia
  • Compare and contrast the pharmacology, efficacy, and safety of conventional therapies as well as those of newer agents
