Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of community and other physicians specializing in oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and other specialties involved in the management of patients with melanoma. Other healthcare professionals with an interest in melanoma may also benefit from this initiative.
Statement of Need
An abundance of data from melanoma clinical trials—some of which have advanced to phase 3—indicate that intralesional agents exploiting the principles of oncolytic immunotherapy hold the promise of improved survival for patients with regional or metastatic disease along with excellent tolerability profiles compared with those of systemic agents. These intralesional agents have a unique mechanism of action, mode of administration, and other characteristics that oncologists may be unfamiliar with, complicating assessment of their benefits and risks. This program is designed to enhance participant understanding of the concepts and data supporting these new intralesional therapies and provide strategies for selecting appropriate patients and evaluating treatment response, facilitating integration of these agents into mainstream melanoma therapy.
Educational Objectives
Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Describe the mechanisms of action of new intralesional agents and appropriate administration techniques
- Formulate melanoma treatment plans that integrate intralesional therapies with other established therapies for appropriate patients
- Differentiate between the response to immunotherapies and response to cytotoxic therapies in patients with melanoma
