Target Audience
Target Audience
This activity has been designed to address the educational needs of dermatologists and podiatrists, as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants specializing in dermatology. This activity will also be of benefit to other healthcare providers involved in the management of patients with onychomycosis.
Statement of Need
Onychomycosis—a chronic infectious disease with significant medical and psychosocial consequences—can be extremely challenging to eradicate. To manage onychomycosis effectively, clinicians need to understand the etiology, diagnosis, and management of onychomycosis as a chronic infectious disease. They must also understand the characteristics of current topical, systemic, and mechanical treatments and be able to appropriately integrate new and emerging therapies into their practice based on treatment benefits and risks and patient factors. This initiative was designed to educate dermatologic clinicians on recent advances and emerging trends in onychomycosis management based on evidence from clinical trials, data on newer antifungal agents, and expert opinion and recommendations.
Learning Objectives
Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Describe how the microbiologic etiology of onychomycosis relates to diagnosis and informs treatment selection.
- Distinguish current and emerging topical, systemic, and mechanical treatments for the subtypes of onychomycosis, including their benefits and limitations, mechanisms of action, dosing regimens, and efficacy and safety profiles.
- Discuss strategies for appropriate treatment of onychomycosis, including a focus on prevention of relapse, reinfection, and recurrence, as well as patient education.
